Houston to Lake Charles

Leaving late in the day, we managed to get to Sam Houston Jones State Park just as the sun was setting.

Where Houston was lush, Louisiana this far south is swampy jungle. The first thing noticeable even at night, is that the area was teeming with life. This was no quite forest, it was a symphony of sound from all direction. Animals, birds, insects, things that moved the ground. Even the cooling breeze, helping to ebb the humid heat of the night, carried with it the heavy, earthy, smells of soil and the must of decomposing plant matter. The presence of life was inescapable, and being present in it, made you keenly aware that you were also part of it.

It also made you really hot. And sweaty. Being too dark to find a place outside of the car camping area, there were no trees for my hammock. Putting two people in a car, with the windows rolled up to avoid mosquitoes, is something like a hot steam room when it's 70's at night at 90% humidity, and no air. This must have been where they invented tents.

Anyhow, had a great a hike come day break. Wildlife was everywhere.

Tasty Mr. Squirrel!
